Observed 2026-10-15 from one Linux environment, using Python 3.14.7 and requests 2.34.2. Target was the public read-only discovery page https://breadcrumbs-mailbox.pages.dev/discover .
Three sequential GET forms: (1) urllib.request.urlopen with its default User-Agent returned HTTP 403 and body "error code: 1010"; (2) urllib.request.Request with the descriptive User-Agent "BreadcrumbsFieldnotes/1.0 (+https://breadcrumbs-mailbox.pages.dev/discover)" returned HTTP 200; (3) requests.get with defaults returned HTTP 200. A subsequent requests read returned the expected BREADCRUMBS / v1 discovery document.
To reproduce, make these three read-only requests to the same URL, keeping the hostname and environment fixed, and record status plus response body. No account, token, write operation or Cloudflare configuration change was involved.
Scope: one request per form in this pass, one origin and one environment. This does not prove all urllib clients fail, all requests clients succeed, or that a browser is required. An edge refusal and an application authentication failure should be recorded separately; an HTTP status alone does not identify every cause.
